Welcome to the first monthly stats roundup for Money by Dad. The domain and blog were initially born on June 28th but my first post wasn’t until July 8th so we’re going to go with round numbers here and just post a July roundup.
I’m not gonna lie it’s been a pretty crazy first month. I really didn’t know what to expect and am honestly blown away that Money by Dad got almost 1000 page views (per Google) or over 1000 page views (per WordPress). Either way, I’m beyond ecstatic that so many people have already visited, commented and shared.
I feel like the past month has been a bit of a search for my blogging voice and finding the exact direction I want to go. I’ve had some really well-performing posts and some duds so far that have taught me a lot about what people are interested in reading.
1st Month Blog Post Summary
During July I published 10 new blog posts with the first on July 8th.
The 8 Ways Kids Will Save You a Ton of Money and How to Stay Financially Sane as a New Parent were by far my most popular posts. These posts both gave me a great lesson in the power of shareable content as both were posted by numerous people on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. They also resulted in some retweets by some accounts with very high follower numbers so that drove quite a bit of traffic as well.
July Traffic Overview
1,073 Page Views and 420 Visitors!!
I never expected to hit a number that high during my first month. Sure it took a little groveling on Twitter to ensure I broke 1,000 but damn it feels good! I do have a be a little realistic here though as Google Analytics only had me at 915 page views and 414 visitors. There were a few days where I was flooded with Twitter referrals that WordPress picked up so I’m not sure if those were bots or what. Either way, I’m super pumped about the results.
I didn’t set any concrete goals going into the month so I can’t say if I met or exceeded any but now that I have a baseline to work with it will give me some numbers to shoot for during August.
Like I said earlier my two top posts drove a lot of traffic to the site during the month. It is a great lesson to really focus on the content I’m putting out as you, the reader’s, willingness to share my content is what will eventually allow me to reach my goals each and every month.
July Social Media Overview
Twitter Stats (754 Followers!!)
I’ve been pretty aggressive pursuing Twitter growth during the month and have been happy with the results so far. Twitter has been the #1 source of referrals during the month by a factor of 5x. I’ve been following close to 100 people/day and have seen some nice follow back numbers.
I’ve also worked a bit on my tweet strategy with building relationships, promoting my content and tweeting content that will result in engagement. Some of my top tweets during the month were shamelessly asking for page views, tweeting about a spammy email pretty much everyone in the PF community received about buying their blog, a tweet promoting my 8 ways kids will save you money post and a picture of a steak I was cooking for dinner. All received engagement rates of 10%+ which I feel is pretty good.
The biggest takeaway for me during the month is to be engaging and don’t just spam people with posts about your content. Bring up topics people like to talk about or will bring a community together. It can certainly be tough at times and result in a lot of tweet duds but the winners more than make up for it.
Below is a summary of my twitter stats for July.
Facebook Stats (3 new followers)
I did very very little outreach on Facebook during the month as it is a beast. I did get a few new follows and spent $3 to promote a post just to test the waters. It resulted in pretty much no interaction though. Boo.
Pinterest Stats (14 new followers)
Pinterest is the one platform, and this has been echoed by pretty much every blogger out there, that has the most potential to drive huge traffic numbers on an evergreen basis. I have to be perfectly honest and say going into my first days with Pinterest I didn’t understand it at all. I still am kind of mystified by the whole process but am starting to get a little more comfortable.
Having only used it for a couple weeks it was still the 4th highest referral source during the month so I can definitely see the potential. Michelle over at Making Sense of Cents recently interviewed Silas and Grace from ChasingFoxes.com about how they’ve driven MASSIVE traffic numbers to their blog in a very short time. One of the best takeaways from the interview was their Pinterest strategy and how they will create 5-6 different pins for every post to see which one works the best.
That is a strategy I want to try once I work up the mental stamina to spend that much time on Pinterest. I know the payoff will be there if I put in the time but to be honest Pinterest isn’t my favorite part of this whole blogging process.
Next Month’s Goals
My completely arbitrary numbers goals to follow. My #1 goal for the month is to increase engagement. Page view numbers and all that are great for the soul and provide a boost to keep going but this blog won’t ever get to the Income Report stage if readers are not engaged.
I need to think about how to start boosting my conversions for email sign ups. Whether this is changing the blog layout (on the list), offering a signup or just adding value in a way that will make people want to engage. I have a few things in mind so stay tuned.

August includes a few vacations so I’m really going to have to hustle and plan out my workload if I hope to meet these goals. Happy blogging and here’s to an awesome August!
P.S. – If you want to help me reach these goals this month feel free to share a few posts on Pinterest/Facebook/Twitter and sign up for my email list 🙂
